Every kitchen remodel begins with a discovery. In this case, the home - a 1970s Lake Tahoe retreat with modern bones - had a kitchen that had fallen out of rhythm with the rest of the architecture.
The space was a separate, enclosed room with walls that divided it from the dining area. A dropped ceiling hid the original wood structure and beams, creating a low, compressed feeling. Despite the home’s stunning natural surroundings and warm materials, the kitchen felt dim, disconnected, and dated.
It functioned, though not as well as it could, and it didn’t flow. The heart of the home was behind walls - cut off from family, life, and conversation.

The Vision: A Modern Kitchen That Belongs
Our design approach was about realignment - bringing the kitchen back into harmony with the home’s modern Tahoe architecture.
We set out to create a space that was open, functional, and honest in materiality. The goals were clear:
Open the kitchen to the dining area for seamless connection and sightlines.
Expose the original wood ceiling and beams to celebrate the home’s craftsmanship.
Define the entryway with a new wall, adding architectural clarity between the foyer and kitchen.
Capture unused garage space to create a walk-in pantry that integrates effortlessly with the new layout.
This was more than a remodel - it was an architectural restoration of intent.

After: An Open Concept Kitchen With Warmth and Structure
The transformation was both visual and spatial. By removing the dividing wall, the new open concept kitchen now connects fluidly with the dining space. Natural light travels freely across the room, emphasizing the home’s modern geometry and texture.
The exposed wood ceiling and beams became the soul of the space - a sculptural canopy that adds warmth and architectural integrity. The kitchen now feels expansive, breathing in step with the rest of the home.
A new wall at the entry subtly defines the foyer without closing it off, giving guests a clear sense of arrival while maintaining an open flow. The added pantry, built from reclaimed garage square footage, provides ample storage and utility - a practical layer that enhances daily living without visual clutter.
